Last Saturday, June 20, Simone of Exquisite Restraint
gave a wonderful presentation about corsets and corsetry. She discussed the history of corsets, how they went from undergarments to outer-garments, the materials they can be made of, how to shop for and fit yourself for a corset, and much more. The following is an exclusive interview with Simone. How long have you been making corsets? 9 years.
How did you get into making corsets? While I was getting degree in theatre I worked in the costume shops and was free to explore what was already available. I started to put lot of people in corsets because of costume access and became interested in making them. Even when the productions werent necessarily period I still used corsets a lot in the costuming.
How did you learn how to make corsets?I have an MFA in costume design and technology. I learned how to design and build everything someone can wear, except shoes. I had to learn how to pattern and construct foundation garments and underpinnings. I learned costume construction and started making modern corsets. I wanted to be part of modern corset making. I dont do period recreations.
In the current era, why do people wear corsetry?Abs and the waist have become erogenous rather than the bust, so clothing is designed like a corset silhouette. Also, people always want something new, a novelty, and everybodys excited about corsets. Within the adult/fetish communities its a part of the lifestyle; people want to go out to clubs and look different. Its a conversation starter.
Are there different types of corsets? Are they used for different purposes? The modern types are usually categorized by under- or over-bust. They can just be for fashion, a special event, prom, wedding, New Years. Or for
waist training/body modification, also called
tight lacing. I see this being much like piercing, tattoos, or plastic surgery. People in different communities all know that a corset is a great part of ones wardrobe beyond a costume.
Who do you make corsets for?Anybody who wants one. I started attracting the goth culture. They immediately understood how to wear them. Then the
fetish/BDSM folks, then mainstream. I make corsets for anyone from mainstream vanilla to crossdressers and transsexuals. Ive never made one for a serious drag queen, but they usually make a lot of their own clothing anyway. Trans folks often want them as undergarments to help them pass. I also make them for men who are gender-bending. I would love to make one for Perry Farrel of
Janes Addiction.

How is corsetry related to sexuality? This is doing what you want with your body, just like all fashion. This is wearing the trappings of sex. These were originally foundation garments, meant to enhance different parts of the body for what was considered attractive during specific time periods. In the 80s, Madonna began wearing underwear on the outside, and that really changed fashion and how people, women especially, see their bodies. People that want tight lacing may be using confinement or bondage as part of their sexual play. This is also part of
D/s or self bondage. Those into forced feminization enjoy being put into corsets. And, some people secretly wear corsetry under their clothes.
