Melinda, you appear to be a prolific writer. How many of your books have been published and when did you start writing?
I started writing fiction professionally in 2006. I have thirteen titles available at Loose Id, thirteen at Resplendence Publishing, six at Changeling Press and one at Aspen Mountain. Ive also written fiction for Bethanys Woodshed and Spanking Romance.
Talk about prolific! Thats wonderful! So what made you choose to write erotic romance?
Its what I like to read. Of course I like regular romance, too, and urban fantasy and mystery. I pretty much read anything, and I have ideas for things other than erotic fiction. Thats what Im centering on right now, though.
Do you juggle stories or write one at a time?
No, I write one story at a time. I dont think I could juggle more than one. I might get ideas while Im writing and jot them down, but the actual writing is one story at a time.
Do you write a detailed outline or synopsis before you start writing a new book, or do you just sit down and create?
Im a pantser. I have an idea of what I want, but my stories are character driven, and sometimes they change during the writing process. Its hard for me to write a blurb before the story is written, and Ive never done an outline. I think that comes from being a former journalist who had to work on deadline.
Do you have a special place where you do all your writing?
I have a desk set up that has research books piled on it. I write in the same place every day, at my desk. Its loaded with lots of stuff: a few candles that I light, mementos from past events that remind me of friends and family, and research books. I never have been very good at keeping things neat, LOL. Im also a night owl so I write late at night and early into the morning.
What books or writers have most influenced your writing career?
I started reading romance novels when I was a teen-ager. At the time the popular writers were Rosemary Rogers and Valerie Sherwood. I devoured all of theirs that I could get my hands on. Ive also read lots of mystery stories and just plain fiction. It would be tough to pick just one book, because there are a lot of them I remember fondly, and reread from time to time.
Are you self-taught or have you taken formal classes?
I have a degree in journalism, and I worked as a newspaper reporter/editor for almost fourteen years before teaching school for a while and then turning to fiction. When I shifted gears to fiction I took a class with Judi McCoy at the Romantic Times Convention at Daytona Beach in 2006 and learned quite a lot from her.
Please tell us about your latest book, including where its available.
My latest release at Loose Id is Desert Surrender. Its a BDSM tale about a very strong-willed woman who meets a man that she immediately falls for. Its pretty heavy on the BDSM, and was a lot of fun to write. On the lighter side my latest tale from Resplendence Publishing is Waking Sebastian, a male sleeping beauty tale about a man who was cursed to walk the earth for one hour a day, until he meets someone who loves him. Both of those released just recently and Im loving the feedback I get from readers.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
I give the advice to aspiring writers that was given to me. If you want to write, thats what you do. Sit down and get the book on paper (or on the hard drive). When its done you can go back and add and subtract as you like, but dont edit yourself to death. Polish it as best you can. And always have critique partners who you know will tell you the truth about what youve written. Be prepared to take what they say and not get mad. Just realize they want to help you put your best foot forward. In the end, though, its your work. Write what you know and what you love.
Do you have a message for your readers?
I love my readers. I appreciate hearing from them about what theyve enjoyed reading, or what they didnt enjoy, and what they would like to see next. Its fantastic to hear someone say, What about so and so, when do they get their story? That means the characters intrigued the reader, and hearing that makes my day!
