From a perfectly innocent desire for a quiet game of cards to a powerful urge for a spot of S&M, the guests at Moscow's "by-the-hour" hotels have a diverse range of very specific requirements. But "romantic encounters", as the management coyly put it, are clearly the driving force behind this quietly prosperous strand of the city's places to stay. Finding a hotel for an hour here is not a problem - as long as you know where to look.


Among the dozens of small hotels around town there are some which offer short-term rooms, but only a few deal exclusively in hourly rooms. The best known of these are Podushkin, which runs 11 hotels, and Pogosti.ru, which runs three, and they admit that the bulk of their customers are people looking for a place for sex.

Asked over the phone if the hotel is good for an "intimate encounter", a manager at one of the Pogosti.ru hotels said. "That's exactly what people come here for."

"I wouldn't say we have any particular kind of clientele," Alexei Voskoboynikov, a co-owner of the Podushkin chain, explained during a meeting at one of the chain's hotels near Shablovskaya metro station. "Of course, people mostly check in to have a romantic encounter. There's all kinds of people - from a married couple with in-laws in the same apartment to a group of several girls and one guy."

"But they may have be here for other reasons, too," he added. "For instance, three men used to check into one of our hotels quite regularly, and we were all puzzled about what they might be doing in the room, as they didn't look gay. Later, it turned out that they came to have a quiet game of Preference."

"Ten years ago, when the chain just started off, most customers were men with whores, but over the years, this kind of customer has become much less common," Voskoboynikov said.

The interior of a by-the-hour hotel doesn't differ much from that of a regular one. One noticeable difference is a condom-selling machine at a prominent spot next to the reception desk and erotic DVDs available for sale.

Meanwhile, those who have "special needs" could also find what they are looking for at "romantic hotels". According to Voskoboynikov, the Podushkin hotel on Rozhdestvensky Bulvar rents out bondage, domination and sado-masochism (BDSM) equipment to interested customers. "We noticed that people who were into BDSM were checking into some of our hotels, and that disturbed other customers," he said. "So we decided to devote one particular hotel to their needs. Interestingly, the proportion of ‘normal' people who want that kind of stuff has increased since then."

Whatever you want from your hour in a hotel, chances are you'd prefer it not to be shared with a jealous spouse or prying boss, so confidentiality is a must. Hotels for an hour insist that thanks to a recent easing of regulations, they now keep information on their customers only until the end of the day. People checking into a hotel need just one ID per room.
There are other small things that are supposed to make customers' lives easier. For instance, not all hotels for "romantic encounters" have signs, and, looking from the street at an unremarkable two-story building, it's hardly possible to guess what is going on inside - however lively things get behind closed doors.

However, hourly rates don't mean hourly stays are possible. At Podushkin, for instance, the minimum stay is three hours, a basic room costs 590 roubles per hour, while a more luxurious one with a Jacuzzi and a complementary bottle of wine would set you back 1,590 roubles per hour. At Pogosti.ru, though, rooms are available actually for an hour, at 700 roubles, 800 roubles and 1,400 roubles, depending on the quality. n
