There was a time when burning a bra was all it took for a woman to prove she was in control of her own life. Thirty-odd (very odd) years on and that seems like such a simple solution.


If the current popular feminine role models are anything to go by, nowadays the way forward in the battle of the sexes is to truss yourself up in latex and leather, walk all over the opposition in sky high stilettos and then thrash them into submission ... making sure it's all caught on candid camera of course.

In this one week alone, a number of our most influential female performers have filmed pop videos that are so steamy they ought to come with an 18 rating (contains adult themes and scenes of a sexual nature).

Alexandra Burke, last year's X Factor winner - remember her? - has got her act together with a new single and accompanying video showing her as a leather-clad dominatrix stalking the streets of LA and scornfully glancing at men who don't rise to her expectations.

Meanwhile, the woman who made it all possible, Cheryl Cole, has also gone all raunchy rock chick for a change to promote her new solo single Fight For This Love, wearing what looks like the entire collection from next season's Ann Summers catalogue in a series of bizarre and arbitrary costume changes. Whay-aye lad, it's proper steamy like!

Further afield, The Sugababes proved they weren't standing for any nonsense by ditching their dowdy lead singer Keisha for a new pneumatic band member Jade Ewen then flying out to the California Desert to film a video featuring them kitted out in corsets, fishnets and skin-tight leather bondage gear whilst doing a strange "doggie-style" dance routine.

Katie Perry, on the other hand, chose a spray-on rubber dress and spike-heeled boots as her ensemble and then proceeded to get soaked with an industrial power hose for her video.

How times have changed, eh? Personally, I'd prefer good old Pan's People any day.
