A British playboy who led a millionaires lifestyle in Florida was sentenced to life in prison today for murdering a man who stood in the way of a property deal.
Thanos Papalexis, 37, was told he faced a minimum term of 20 years for strangling and torturing a caretaker who could have stymied a £2 million development deal.
Charalambos Christodoulides, 55, a shy loner known as Bambi, refused to move out of a flat in a north London warehouse that the struggling property developer was trying to sell.
Rather than tolerate a threat to the deal, Papalexis tortured and killed the caretaker. His body was found two weeks later, in March 2000, after the transaction fell through leaving Papalexis in financial ruin.
Judge Jeremy Roberts told him he had put his career ahead of a life. He told him: You are a totally amoral person in the sense that you do not think twice in doing or saying anything which helps you achieve your own ends.
This was an execution carried out for financial gain. You treated Charalambos as completely expendable.
The case against Papalexis was strengthened after a former Miami porn star and £1,750-a-night prostitute stated that he had confessed to the killing. Rebecca DeFalco told US marshals that her former lover told her he had killed a man who was a problem and gave her a graphic description of the murder.
Papalexis, the son of a Greek shipping magnate, was arrested in Palm Beach, Florida, and extradited last year. He was found guilty of murder earlier this month after a three-month trial.
At the time of his arrest he was apparently enjoying a lavish lifestyle. He had hired designer Gianni Versaces former home and held a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, but his American business dealings were in turmoil.
He was being chased by creditors for $2 million (£1.2 million), including for unpaid rent on the $3 million mansion.
During the trial, the jury heard that he was a classic psychopath whose gratification in criminal, sexual and aggressive impulses was out of control. He indulged in sadistic sex and hired prostitutes for orgies at his mansion. In his entry on a sadomasochism website, he described himself as the king of his own realm and all others are to be subjected to his will.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "In the nine years that it has taken to bring Papalexis to justice, all avenues of evidence have been fully explored to ensure that the best possible evidence can be put before the court. This investigation should serve to remind those that commit murder in London that they should not rest easily. The Metropolitan Police will relentlessly pursue them until they are placed before the courts to answer for their crimes."
