Murder plot case going to trial

A trial is slated to begin Feb. 1 for a multi-millionaire accused of hiring a hit man to kill his wife at the couple's North Kawartha Township cottage.


Alex Petraitis, 67, along with his dominatrix mistress, Sandra Lynn Rinella, 46, were charged in January 2004 with conspiracy to commit the murder of Kristen Petraitis.

They are accused of hiring Rinella's former common-law spouse Kerry Robert Anderson to do the job.

Petraitis, who owned magazine and book distributor Metro News Ltd., was arrested near his North Kawartha Township cottage by Peterborough County OPP in January 2004.

After Petraitis was released from custody on bail, the case was moved to courts in Scarborough.

Anderson, 45, pleaded guilty to attempted extortion against Petraitis in September 2004 and was sentenced to five years on top of eight months of pre-trial custody.

During his plea, court heard Anderson tried to extort $1 million and a luxury Hummer vehicle from Petraitis -- reportedly worth $60 million -- after the businessman and Rinella tried to hire him in the summer of 2003 in the plot to kill Kristen Petraitis.

Those admissions don't constitute evidence against either Petraitis or Rinella.
