Art scene trough the keyhole

Every Tuesday night, those equipped with a scrap of paper, a pencil, 12 dollars, and an open mind, are invited into the kinky world of The Keyhole Sessions. TKS is life drawing turned on its ear. The models, which look like Suicide Girls and PFL champions, pose nude in simulate sex positions, while wrapped up in shibari-style rope bondage.


The Sessions was founded last May by Toronto-based graphic designer Sonya JF Barnett. Unsatisfied with the “stuffy” or “disorganized” life drawing opportunities, Barnett embarked upon her own brand of art classes. In her adopted role as “The Madame”, Barnett has spearheaded an eagerly anticipated event which grows in popularity week to week. If Thursday is the new Friday, then TKS is quickly turning Tuesday into the new hump Wednesday.

We caught up with “The Madame” to talk about the sessions, her thing for kink, and the local art scene. This is what she had to say:

Lucid Media Magazine: What were some of the challenges you faced when organizing the first session?

The Madame: The two biggest hurdles were models and location. I started posting on Craigslist in search of models. It was tough in that what I was describing could easily be misconstrued as sleazy, and coming from the hardcore porn side: “Models expected to pose nude, tied up in rope, simulate sex, little pay. Send photos.” That’s not an easy sell. But funnily enough, applications started coming in. Most notable, applications including close-ups of cocks wrapped in leather and steel bondage gear.

LMM: What kind of people have you found attending TKS?

TM: We have a really nice range of people attending, from art school students, to those who just want something extra and fun in their week, as well as professional artists.

LMM: Once the tee-hee factor of TKS has passed, what keeps students returning each week?

TM: I used to ask myself that all the time. What I realized, to my great delight, is that those who come really do come to draw interesting forms. I’ve been told things like, “I haven’t picked up a pencil in 20 years, and now I do, thanks to you,” and “the rest of my week is so bland, this is something that I look forward to every week.” I know it is comments like those that keep me returning every week.
