CANADA- TORONTO- A businessman accused of conspiring with his dominatrix-mistress to murder his wife was offered an illicit deal that would have ensured his acquittal, a jury heard Monday.
In his opening to the jury, defence lawyer Eddie Greenspan said his client Alex Petraitis did not take the bait when an Eganville resident Robbie Verch made the offer to him through his uncle, Barry, who is Petraitis good friend.
Under the deal, the key Crown witness, convicted killer Kerry Bob Anderson, would sabotage the prosecution case in return for money from a land sale, court was told.
Barry Verch communicated an offer from his nephew Robbie to Alex: An offer to exchange evidence that would ensure Alex Petraitis would be acquitted at this trial, Greenspan said.
He referred to a conversation that occurred before the trial was originally scheduled to begin in February.
The prosecution is alleging Sandra Rinella and Petraitis plotted to murder his long-time wife, Kirsten, and asked Anderson to do it.
Petraitis, 68, and Rinella, 47, pleaded not guilty to conspiring to kill his wife and counselling Anderson, 46, to commit murder.
The trial was adjourned in February after Robbie Verch died in his burned SUV.
Greenspan alleges that it was the Crowns pivotal witness, Anderson who orchestrated and masterminded the extortion bid against Petraitis.
Under the deal the businessman would buy land in the Eganville-area for which he would pay a grossly inflated price in return for the testimony that would acquit him.
Kerry Anderson denied knowing Robbie Verch and denied any involvement with him or the extortion. And he (Anderson) lived in Eganville (a town of 1,400 near Ottawa) during the time of the extortion, Greenspan said.
The first witness at the trial was Anderson, the lawyer said.
He accused Anderson of distorting the truth in this case and continuing to try to manipulate the court.
