Steyn rips West's weakness
LONDON ADDRESS: Western civilization's slide has left a void to be filled by the Muslims, Chinese, or Russians, commentator tells Centennial Hall audience

UK- LONDON- Mark Steyn hardly needs a dominatrix to lash out at what he views as threats to western society -- but he had one Monday night, complete with whip, on a London stage.


There was no confusing one target: The dominatrix was joined on stage by a man dressed as an Islamic Imam, fake beard and all.

But while Islam in its most extremist form was a target of jabs by Steyn, his most basic target was closer to home -- a western society he says has become so anemic over decades that it is ripe for the taking by Muslims.

Speaking of the U.S., his adoptive home, Steyn said it's too late to speak of imminent decline -- the fall has already begun.

"The civilization that built the modern world is sliding off the cliff," he said.
In his world view, Americans drove progress in the first half of the 20th century and, along with other English-speaking countries, preserved civilization against the onslaught of Axis powers in the Second World War.

But since 1950, that civilization has been in decline, dragged down by people too dependent on government and so committed to multicultural tolerance they've learned to loathe themselves.

It is that weakness that has made us vulnerable to Islamic people, whom he has described as weak and opportunistic.

If Muslims don't fill the void, Chinese or Russians will, he said.
But while Steyn's warning is serious and dark, his delivery is mostly satiric: He introduced the dominatrix as the head of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

So when it came time to warn how he says Muslims are out-breeding Christians in Austria, Steyn borrowed from the musical the Sound of Music: "How do you solve a problem like Sharia?"

About 900 people filled most of the main floor of Centennial Hall to hear Steyn and most appeared to be fans -- there wasn't a protest in sight and only one of a half dozen questions from the audience challenged his views.

Most were older, in contrast to the largely student crowd that in March listened to conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

The difference fit their audiences: Where Coulter would punch out an acerbic one-liner, Steyn delivered dissertations to older listeners with longer attention spans.

Both came to London through the work of a group of young Conservatives at strictlyright.com.

While Coulter came to London without incident, Steyn provoked controversy when the London Convention Centre refused to rent space for his appearance.

The general manager of the Convention Centre, Lori Da Silva, said the refusal was logistical and financial -- she feared the audience might include protesters and disturb other patrons.

But local organizers said the rejection was entirely political and the result of complaints from London's Muslim community.

Steyn didn't have the final word but he did seek the final laugh -- he chose a dominatrix because the same convention centre that concluded he would bring too much trouble allowed a sex show earlier.
