Millionaire in alleged murder plot a sexual masochist, expert says

CANADA- TORONTO- A millionaire accused of plotting with his dominatrix mistress to have his wife murdered was exhibiting behaviours typical of a sexual masochist, says a leading forensic psychiatrist.


Alex Petraitis talked about wanting to be tied up and rendered helpless while his wife was kidnapped, which is typical of masochistic sexual behavior, Dr. Park Dietz testified Tuesday.

An American expert in crime and sexual deviancy, who has worked on such cases as Theodore “Unabomber” Kaczynski and serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Dietz said there are several other signs that Petraitis was acting out a submissive role.

Petraitis, 68, once the head of magazine distributor Metro News, and his former dominatrix mistress, Sandra Rinella, 47, are on trial for allegedly hiring a hit man to murder Petraitis’ then-wife in early 2004.

The so-called hit man, Kerry Bob Anderson, 46, has testified that he kept upping his demands for money from Petraitis and eventually amassed over $100,000 - more than four times what was originally agreed - but never intended to follow through on the killing.

Edward Greenspan, Petraitis’ lawyer, has told the jury that Dietz will tell them that the wealthy businessman’s behavior in the alleged murder plot was consistent with harmless role-playing.

Other signs of Petraitis’ submissive behaviour include wearing diapers to meet the hit man at his mistress’s home, an indication of “mother-infant diaper role playing,” Dietz testified.

The fact that Petraitis transferred “enormous sums of money” from his control to his mistress’ control was another sign of his masochism, Dietz told Greenspan.

Dietz continues testifying Wednesday.
