CANADA - LONG BEACH - A fire inside a Westside warehouse containing bondage gear wreaked $100,000 in damage Monday.
Long Beach firefighters were sent to 1517 W. Esther St. about 7:56 a.m., said Fire Department spokesman Steve Yamamoto.
A large plume of thick black smoke could be seen billowing from the brick building, Yamamoto said.
Firefighters were on scene within four minutes and knocked the blaze down within another four minutes, he said.
Two people who were inside the building were able to escape unharmed just as fire crews arrived, Yamamoto said.
It appeared as though the fire started in a recreation area outside the building, where a hot tub and other items were located, Yamamoto said.
The flames then spread into the building and the radiant heat from the blaze melted a control panel at a neighboring car wash, knocking out power to that business, the firefighter said.
Arson investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire, Yamamoto said. Yamamoto said he was not notified of the contents of the building, but witnesses at the scene Monday said the warehouse appeared to hold bondage equipment, including handcuffs and other restraint devices.
Online photos of the property show a stage and equipment for musicians inside with a front window designed like a spider web and a wall sconce designed to look like a human hand holding a torch.
The location, listed online as "Babe's Warehouse," is owned by Norman and Olivia Dillinger, according to property records.
Neither the owners nor anyone at the location could be reached for comment Monday.
