Sentencing postponed former Secaucus tax collector who stole $750K

USA - The sentencing of former Secaucus tax collector Alan Bartolozzi who pleaded guilty in May to stealing roughly $750,000
, from city coffers was postponed today due the illness of his attorney, officials said. His sentencing has been rescheduled to July 6.
"The defendant breached his bond of trust with the citizens of Secaucus and he will pay the price in state prison," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said after Bartolozzi's guilty plea in May.
Bartolozzi, 58, who pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and faces up to 15 years behind bars, said in court at the time, "If someone paid cash for tax purposes, the funds would be kept."
Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hernandez alleged Bartolozzi stole about $750,000 in tax funds between February 2008 to May 2009.
Bartolozzi, who was also treasurer of the city employees union, also admitted that between November 2004 and April 2009 he wrote an number of checks from union funds as loans to himself. He said he did not have permission to write the checks, never paid the money back, and used it for his own purposes.
Hernandez alleged the tax collector of 25 years stole about $25,000 from the union.
Bartolozzi faces up to 10 years in prison for stealing the tax money and up to five years for stealing the union funds. Hernandez said he will argue that the sentences be served consecutively.
At Bartolozzi's arraignment, Hernandez argued he was a flight risk, noting that he had wired money to a dominatrix in five states and internationally. Hernandez said the probe revealed Bartolozzi made 19 wire transfers to New York City dominatrix "Tara Juliana." A picture of Bartolozzi, the dominatrix and others was posted on her Web site.
Bartolozzi will be sentenced by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan in the Hudson County Administration Building in Jersey City.
A restitution hearing at which officials would determine the actual amount Bartolozzi will have to pay back was to be held. His attorney, Don Gardner, said the sum is nowhere near as high as prosecutors claim.
As part of the plea, Bartolozzi will also be barred from future public employment.
