USA - SALT LAKE CITY - A tabloid sensation in Britain in the 1970s, Joyce McKinney made a surprise appearance at Salt Lake City's Broadway Theatre on Friday night at a screening of the documentary film.
McKinney said she wanted to set the record straight about what happened with the alleged kidnapping that became a media feeding frenzy.
"I don't think it really reflects mine and (the alleged victim's) feelings," McKinney told Fox 13 after the film "Tabloid" had screened.
McKinney, a former Miss Wyoming, moved to Utah and fell in love with a man who later went on to a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"He vanished," McKinney told reporters. "I did what anybody would do. I looked for him."
Authorities at the time claimed she followed him to England, kidnapped him, chained him up and raped him for several days. McKinney denies it.
"We were three days together. We went to this little romantic cottage," she said. "We weren't bondage sex freaks like the press portrayed us."
The documentary film "Tabloid" chronicles the case. It was a tabloid sensation in the United Kingdom. McKinney vanished and re-emerged decades later in 2008, when her dog was cloned in South Korea.
She appeared on Friday with the cloned dog, named "Booger Hong."
