7-year sentence for ex-Secaucus tax collector with Dominatrix

USA - NEW JERSEY - The former Secaucus tax collector who authorities say stole nearly $800,000 from the town and a municipal union and used some of the money to pay a dominatrix was sentenced to seven years in prison yesterday.
“I just trust that the enormity of what you did is really truly with you,” Hudson County Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan told Alan Bartolozzi at his sentencing.
“So what did you get? You are going away to state prison . . . you are disgraced.”
Upon being sentenced, Bartolozzi was handcuffed and led from the Jersey City courtroom by a sheriff’s officer.
In May, the 58-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and yesterday he was sentenced to seven years for one count and three years for the other. Callahan said the sentences will run concurrently.
A restitution hearing, to determine how much money Bartolozzi must return to the town, is scheduled for November.
Bartolozzi’s attorney, Milagros Camacho, said he borrowed the money and had intended to pay it back, and she also contested the amount prosecutors claims he stole, saying it was far less.
Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Leo Hernandez said that Bartolozzi stole about $750,000 in tax funds between February 2008 and May 2009.
Prosecutors also alleged the tax collector stole about $25,000 from the municipal employees union.
At yesterday’s hearing it was said that Bartolozzi would simply pocket cash tax payments and then alter records to cover it up.
Prior to sentencing, Camacho pointed out that it was Bartolozzi’s own audit that turned up the theft. But she also alleged that others stole money from the town.
Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Tom Carroll said he knows of no allegations that money was taken by anyone other than Bartolozzi.
