Movie: 'Wound' makes no sense

CANADA - Wound is ostensibly a horror film about mental illness. It plays like a Film 101 collection of no-budget, blood-spurting special effects; other than shock value, the film has little to offer.
Susan (Kate O'Rourke) is the kind of woman who likes to wrap her own turds in tin foil and put them in the freezer. So maybe it's no surprise when she castrates Dad. After all, she had to put up with his incestuous assaults all those years, and then there's the fact that he keeps quoting Shakespeare. Guess he had it coming to him.
Meanwhile, here's Susan and a guy playing bondage and submission games. Let's get those clothes pegs on your nipples, Susan!
Oops, time to bury Dad in the garden. Oh, look! There's a headstone there already. That must be mom's grave.
Meanwhile, over here we have Tanya (Te Kaea Beri), a young woman searching for her birth mother. Why was she abandoned as an infant? Who gave her away?
Here's Tanya in some bondage club. She longs for her boyfriend, Mark, but he's busy lying down on the railway tracks. Wha?
Oops, now Tanya is being raped by some guy in a pig mask. Hmmmm ... None of this makes any sense. Maybe it's a dream sequence?
Turns out, Susan is Tanya's mother. Tanya goes to Susan's house. She insinuates herself into Susan's life. This permits more scenes of Susan's breasts and more blood-gushing scenes. There's a particularly goofy birth scene with a stunt vagina that immediately made us think about stuffing a Thanksgiving turkey.
Susan goes to see her shrink. Her dead mother keeps turning up. The psychiatrist reminds Susan she has no living children. The doctor discusses Susan's medications. Then there are scenes of eye-gouging, blood vomiting, arson and throat cutting. You are to understand that Susan is deeply disturbed and all the people are just manifestations of her mental illness. Or something.
Writer/director David Blyth (Angel Mine, Death Warmed Up) is generally described as controversial filmmaker, risk-taker, splatter king, etc. His movie was nearly banned in his native New Zealand. That must have really boosted box office.
Seriously, are horror fans really this cheaply bought off? Some dry ice, a bit of licking up blood off the ground and a lingering close-up of a fake penis getting scissored off? For that you'd pay $12.50? Give your head a shake.
