USA - Genesis P-Orridge is an artist's artist. And in Marie Losier's remarkable documentary, "The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye," his career, his life, his love, his art - they all seem one and the same.
This experimental, impressionistic and ultimately touching biopic is anchored by P-Orridge's once-in-a-lifetime relationship with dominatrix Lady Jaye, whom P-Orridge meets in a basement "dungeon."
This unlikely first meeting blossoms into a romantic, collaborative and inseparable journey together. They become so in tune with each other that they embark on an artistic quest to meld their identities. This includes both of them undergoing major plastic surgery, with P-Orridge getting breast implants so that he can resemble Lady Jaye as closely as possible.
What makes all this compelling is that the industrial music pioneer P-Orridge (whose concerts shine) is so well spoken. And so human. Rarely do films offer such intimate insights into the inner workings of a true artist.
The archival footage - home cookouts, music performances, band practice, plastic surgery visits - is wonderful. Losier fills most of the gaps with some nifty set-pieces that would seem right at home at one of P-Orridge's exhibitions.
But most important, the relationship between P-Orridge and Lady Jaye comes off as heartfelt, and "Ballad" makes you feel something. Just like art.
