Women turning erotic book series 'Grey' into a best-selling phenomenon

USA - Fifty Shades of Grey has Americas national thong in a twist.
However you categorize it - mommy porn, erotic fiction, Twilight fan fiction gone rogue, a symbol of moral decay - British writer E.L. James NC-17 bondage trilogy has gone from e-book cult favorite to publishing phenomenon.
Originally published by a small press in Australia, the books have become such big hits that Vintage Books (a division of Random House) just bought the digital and print world rights - and will release 750,000 paperback copies of the trilogy in April.
All three books are in the top 20 on USA TODAYs Best-Selling Books list: Fifty Shades of Grey has rocketed to No. 4; the second book, Fifty Shades Darker, is No. 9; and the conclusion, Fifty Shades Freed, is No. 17.
Whats their appeal?
These characters just crawled into my head, and even when I was finished, they stayed with me for a while, says fan Holly Leffler, 37, who gave the first book five stars in her review on the Goodreads site. (More than 8,000 people on Goodreads have rated Fifty Shades of Grey. Although 58 percent have given it five stars, a significant group considers it poorly written.)
A married Michigan mother of two who works as a mortgage processor, Leffler read all three books last year. I like nothing better than for my stories to have intense emotion, she says.
Intense is the right word to describe the plot about virginal college student Ana, who becomes sexually enthralled with 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey in a graphically described sadomasochistic relationship.
The author is a London married mother of two and former TV executive who started out writing sexually charged Twilight fan fiction. With different names and a revised plot, Fifty Shades of Grey was first published in May 2011 by The Writers Coffee House.
Several factors are driving sales. Edward Nawotka of the online journal Publishing Perspectives notes that erotic romance has been a strong e-book genre, in part because of the formats privacy. However, he believes that Fifty Shades will be a short-lived phenomenon.
Honestly, you cant exactly turn this into a mainstream movie, which helped Twilight, for example, he says. (The Hollywood Reporter says the books are attracting movie interest.)
On her influential romance blog, Dear Author, Jane Litte has addressed the many shades of James trilogy, including whether its an erotic ripoff of the Twilight series.
Meanwhile, the New York media have documented Fifty Shades popularity among Upper East Side moms. And Litte notes that mommy blogs have embraced the series. For many of these women, it is apparently the first sexually explicit book they may have read, she says. To many, it is titillating. To others, it is being read for its purported marital aids. Its good for my marriage is a comment Ive heard more than once.
