UK - LONDON - I cant wear high heels which would disqualify me as a reviewer of Christian Louboutins first ever British retrospective but for the fact that many of his shoes are quite clearly sculpture.
Louboutin, together with Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo, is one of a triumvirate of shoemakers who have turned high fashion into art. Louboutin is the naughtiest and this show, which aims to present not only the shoes but also the process, celebrates his key influences of burlesque, circus, sex and bondage.
Carousels, mirrored shelves (to reflect back Louboutins signature red soles) and velvet frame 200 of his creations, in segments that examine his devotion to artisanal skills, the chaos of his work space and the building of a shoe. Short films showing Louboutin prancing about with burlesque dancers demonstrate a sense of the absurd that contrasts with his more ethereal designs.
In everything, sex is never far away. Louboutins vertiginous heels are taken to their logical conclusion in Fetish, shoes that render their wearer helpless and probably prone. The shows finale is a hologram performance by Dita Von Teese. It is a palpable illustration of Louboutins sentiment that the core of my work is dedicated not to pleasing women but to pleasing men. This exhibition, rather like the shoes, certainly has it all. Bel Jacobs
