FRANCE - CANNES - Another day, another skein of crazy sex scenes at the Cannes Film Festival. This time it was Nicole Kidman shocking viewers with wild gyrations in Lee Daniels' killer thriller, The Paperboy. Not to mention Matthew McConaughey falling into a gay bondage tryst that leads to bloodshed. And Zac Efron spending time in tightie whities.
In Kidman's case, she displays herself white-trash style in a prison visiting room to push John Cusack's convicted killer into a sexual frenzy. She spreads her legs and rips open her pantyhose, while moaning and opening her mouth as if performing fellatio. Unlike Sharon Stone uncrossing her legs in Basic Instinct, Kidman wears panties. Nevertheless, the scene is loud, brazen, rude and crude.
It was not difficult to do it, Kidman told a Cannes Film Festival press conference Thursday. "Strangely no because I think I had to step into a place to play the character where I didn't step out of it too much and look at myself. So it wasn't hard to shoot. I've been looking as an actor for something raw and something dangerous in terms of performance and this kind of came along."
Kidman said she responded to Daniels' Oscar-nominated film, Precious. "I loved Precious and I thought I'd love to be in his hands to see what I could do and to go where he could take me. Directors bring things out in their actors and this is what Lee brought out of me at the time. I've not seen the movie so I may be uncomfortable watching the movie. But, you know, that's my job. It's my job to give over to something and not to put in my own judgments in terms of how I feel as Nicole playing the character."
What Daniels brought out of Kidman was primal, although viewers may be disgusted. Kidman plays an oversexed Barbie doll who campaigns to get Cusack off death row and freed. McConaughey and David Oyelowo play reporters trying to prove he was wrongly convicted. Efron is McConaughey's little bro and in love with Kidman, despite a 20-year age gap. There is an undercurrent of racism set against the Civil Rights movement. Singer Macy Gray plays "the help" and narrator.
With a sly grin, Gray said in Cannes that The Paperboy is "a crazy movie" and: "It's all about sex. Little Zac is in his underwear for half the movie. I was distracted but ..." She added that Daniels loves to take risks, like making McConaughey a homosexual in the movie "and he's the sexist man alive ... in what year?"
For his part, Efron skirted around the issue of eroticism. He looks uncomfortable in his own sex scene with Kidman. In another scene, Kidman's character pees on him after he gets stung by jellyfish. "I don't think I was supposed to feel comfortable in the film," Efron said. "It's like life. This character was learning the way of the world and that can be very, very uncomfortable. But I think it's also exciting, it's new."
