Surrey-held Naked Truth awards shine light of reality on adult entertainment industry

CANADA - Mistress Katia, a dominatrix who keeps a dungeon as a playroom in her Vancouver home, has been busy shopping for a special outfit for the upcoming Naked Truth Adult Entertainment Awards in Surrey.
But finding a cute little outfit has not been that easy.
“ I can’t make my mind up,” she said, Wednesday, of her wardrobe for the night.
“I’ll definitely have a whip or crop with me. I’m also thinking about being a naughty nurse, but I haven’t decided.”
But there’s one thing she is positive about when she shows up for the event - “I’ll definitely have a slave in a collar and leash,”
A past winner (under the former name of Mz Scream) in the porn category at the annual Canada-wide sex industry awards show, Mistress Katia, revels at the chance each summer for those in the adult entertainment business to meet for the night and swap stories about an industry the public doesn’t really understand.
And she thinks winning an award at the event does recognize her true skill at her chosen profession.
“I’m really talented at what I do,” she said in an interview Wednesday before a “slave” arrived for an afternoon encounter at her fully equipped dungeon.
“People don’t understand how much work goes into training for these talents.”
The annual event runs at The Byrd Showroom in the Flamingo Hotel July 21 starting at 3 p.m.
From 3 to 7 p.m. there is a meet and greet of all those who are nominated in the various categories. The awards go from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and afterwards there’s a social mixer at the popular strip club.
Trina Ricketts, the awards show organizer, notes that the evening public event is designed to give people a better understanding of the exotic entertainment business.
”The entire event is open to the public,” points out Ricketts, a former exotic dancer. “We want people to see there are positive aspects to the industry and it is not just this cesspool of degradation which people mistake our industry to be.”
According to Ricketts The Naked Truth Adult Entertainment Awards celebrate the accomplishments of exotic dancers, escorts, dominatrixes, webcam workers, photographers, costume designers, advocates, and sex industry suppliers.
Through her Naked Truth website, people vote for their top pick in the various categories and then on awards night they announce the winners.
The adult entertainment business is also good for the economy, says Ricketts. “We keep a lot of people in business - we are good for the economy,” she adds.
Ricketts also notes the awards show is also an opportunity for those in the industry to salute each other.
“We are very proud of the work people do in our industry,” she said.
