SOUTH AFRICA - JOHANNESBURG - One of the highlights of this years Sexpo exhibition was a full display by Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism (BDSM) practitioners, who are often labelled as unacceptable by society.
The four-day Sexpo Health, Sexuality and Lifestyle exhibition, which opened yesterday, is being held at the Nasrec Expo Centres Hall 6 and comprises various exhibitor stands showcasing the sale of items ranging from sex toys, stimulants, tips on how to improve sexual intercourse, pornographic DVDs and much more.
Immediately visible to visitors is a room draped with black cloth. A board hanging on the door reads, The Dungeon, which arouses the visitors curiosity.
Inside the dungeon, a number of cubicles next to one another is visible. Each cubicle had a different type of BDSM equipment.
A topless woman in one cubicle had been standing while a man clamped her nipples with small silver pliers.
She introduced herself as Inja (not her real name), then pointed to the man whom she introduced as her master, called Different One.
It is difficult to come out, telling people that Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism is not only a preference of mine, but also defines who I am and what I love. Similarly, people who are in to BDSM endure the same harsh treatment and judgment that society shows towards homosexuals said Inja yesterday.
BDSM is a form of personal relationship centring around activities that are erotic and not necessarily sexual.
It may include the consensual use of restraint, intense sensory stimulation, and fantasy power role play.
Inja said she found comfort at the Sexpo as it was the only place she, as well as other BDSM practitioners, could be themselves.
This is the only time we feel comfortable enough to express who we are, without the nasty labels and comments, she said.
Inja said at a young age she discovered she was different.
I find pleasure in the pain inflicted by my master and derive more pleasure when seeing bruises on my body, she said.
Also present at the exhibition were multi-award winning porn star, Jesse Jane, former Miss Nude Australia, Suzie Q, one of Australias leading male pole dancers, Toby J, international hypnotist Mark Anthony, and the man who paints portraits with his penis, scrotum and buttocks, Tim Patch, better known as Pricasso.
Pricasso said his divorce was the motivating factor behind his current career.
About seven years ago I decided to take on this challenge which took two years to perfect, said Pricasso.
The aim of the exhibition is to educate, inform, entertain and celebrate sexuality in a fun, exciting and safe atmosphere.
