USA - ILLINOIS - Illinois priest whose church has criticized same-sex marriage plans in the state was caught handcuffed in his rectory
An American bishop has released a statement on the anti-gay Catholic priest who called 911 after getting stuck in handcuffs.
Bishop Thomas John Paprocki said he first became aware of the incident late last year, when
Father Tom Donavan from Springfield, Illinois had to call emergency services.
Im going to need help getting out before this becomes a medical emergency, Donavan said, slightly garbled, in the emergency call.
Youre stuck in a pair of handcuffs? the dispatcher asked.
[I was] playing with them and I need help getting out, Donavan responded.
After police removed the cuffs, they then conducted a miscellaneous investigation.
In
a statement, Paprocki says Donavan was mortified by what happened, but insisted he had been alone the whole time in his rectory and denied it was sexually motivated.
The bishop granted a requested leave of absence, saying Donavan was dealing with high levels of stress by a psychological condition that manifests itself in self-bondage.
Although the psychological explanation of non-sexual self-bondage provides some context to what occurred, yet the details of this incident are understandably disturbing, Paprocki said.
In order to address these concerns, Father Donovan is on an indefinite leave of absence for an extended period of professional help and spiritual renewal in order to understand and address the issues that have resulted in this very tragic situation.
While non-sexual self-bondage is not a recognized mental health diagnosis, psychologists do believe people deal with stress in a variety of ways. Paprocki said it was lucky Donavans did not manifest itself in alcoholism or recreating pornography.
On 3 January, Paprocki and his clergymen were joined in voicing their criticism of same-sex marriage plans in Illinois.
In the Senate Executive Committee, he testified by saying it would radically redefine what marriage is for everybody.
Neither two men or two women can possibly form a marriage, Paprocki said. Our law would be wrong if it said that they could.
Despite the Catholic Church, the measure advanced to the Illinois Senate with an 8-5 vote.
