P queen faces jail time

NEW ZEALAND - Jolene Rose has been crowned as Woodville's drugs queen, albeit one who faces a lengthy prison term for her part in a multimillion-dollar methamphetamine enterprise run from her secluded rural property
A Palmerston North jury took just three hours yesterday to find the 36-year-old dominatrix and sex worker guilty of one charge each of dealing methamphetamine around the North Island between August 2008 and March last year and possessing methamphetamine for supply.
Rose was also found guilty of 14 charges of unlawfully possessing firearms, four of unlawfully possessing ammunition and two of unlawfully possessing a restricted weapon.
Halfway through her nine-day trial in the High Court at Palmerston North, Rose admitted a charge of possessing cannabis for supply.
She was jointly charged with her partner, Sean Christiaan Murray, 43, who last week admitted all 23 charges.
A police search of the Hope Rd property they occupied on March 20 last year uncovered $764,830 cash, 4 grams of methamphetamine, 16 weapons, some loaded, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
The Crown successfully argued that Rose and Murray peddled P to the tune of $5.5 million in an unusually secure house where loaded guns were readily available. Security cameras and a buzzer alerted the dealers to anyone straying on to their property. There was a "tick list" showing who owed money and a notebook to keep track of where the cash was stashed.
The defence said Murray was the dangerous dealer who had Rose under his thrall. She sold cannabis, worked as a prostitute and sold arts and crafts, her lawyer Paul Knowsley said. The defence said Rose's share of the cash found was about $80,000 and she was unaware of the cache of firearms at the property.
Back in 2008, Rose's finances were less rosy - she owned only a 1958 house bus, but the defence said her prostitution work could bring in about $2000 a week.
A man, whose identity is suppressed, told the court how he used Rose's services and found her a good person to talk to.
The defence also argued that the methamphetamine at Hope Rd might not belong to Rose, and if it did, might be for her personal use.
The Crown did not call any evidence from anyone who Rose sold methamphetamine to but relied heavily on text messages sent from her phone.
These exchanges used code and methamphetamine was referred to by other names.
One such text from an unknown drug user asked about buying an "o-ring" for his tractor.
"For some reason this person wanted to buy farming equipment from Rose," prosecutor Daniel Flinn said.
One or two texts later the user was then asking for "chicken" and the pair arranged to meet in the Woolworths supermarket car park for the poultry to be handed over.
"You have to think what on earth is going on there?," Flinn said.
"I'm sure Woolworths has got lots of chicken. What's stopping him from going to the supermarket and buying them himself?"
Rose was remanded in custody. Along with Murray, she will be sentenced in Wellington next month.
