Book: Spanking City Hall Former Dominatrix Melyssa Hubbard
Source: Indystar.com. - Indystar.com - USA
USA - INDIANA - Melyssa Hubbard, formerly a dominatrix, used to run a dungeon out of her Meridian-Kessler home. Then she helped spark the property tax battles that contributed to the upset of then-Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson. Along the way, she founded the states tea party. Shes chronicled these events of the past 10 years in her book Spanking City Hall.
Now Hubbard, who recently changed her last name from Donaghy, is heading in a new direction. Shes dismantled her dungeon - although she remains active in the alternative lifestyle - and no longer has ties to the tea party. Instead, shes concentrating on writing books.
Q How did you make the move into politics? A Mayor Bart Peterson went to the media and told lies about my business. So I decided to fight. As a dominatrix, I was used to a lot of lying men, some of them would come to me because they were liars, and they wanted to be straightened out. So I thought, well if hes lying about me, what else is he lying about?
Q Had you been involved in politics before? A Four years earlier I joined the Libertarian Party because WRTV (Channel 6) had outed my dungeon (where men would pay to don womens clothing and submit to her control). I needed to find a political home where the rule of law might apply to everyone equally. I was a dominatrix. I only saw three clients a week. I had tons of free time, and I volunteered to be the executive assistant to the new state director.
Q Before that, were you a Republican or a Democrat? A Democrat. I thought the Democrats represented social freedom, but they really didnt. I was politically naive. Now not so much.
Q How did you come to found the states tea party? A I was beating the drums for the fair tax and held a rally on the Fourth of July in front of the governors mansion. Someone in the crowd said, We need a tea party. I thought, Oh well I throw parties. I had a background as a caterer and my parties for years had been known as epic, and I said, if the people want a party, then Im going to give them a party.
Q Are you no longer involved with the tea party because of your past as a dominatrix? A No, I think its because they knew they could not control me. It got hijacked by the GOP operatives. They wouldnt let me touch it, even though I had troops on the ground and major successes under my belt. The original tea party was nonpartisan. But the political powers want America to be divided so we can be conquered. Right now we have a polarized country and left and right are at each others throats. We need to transcend politics, thats my message. The people are dominant, the government is submissive.
Q Are you still politically active? A Im transcending politics. My work is funding Circle City Christian Center, (a local religious entity, whose self-proclaimed mantra is, If It Aint Odd, It Probably Is Not God.). I want to fund a social media network for people who want to help the planet transcend and evolve and come together.
Q How did you get involved with the dominatrix lifestyle?A I used to think it was this dark, scary dangerous underworld, and it really isnt at all. A boyfriend introduced me to it, and I really connected to it because it was very sophisticated, and it engaged my intellect. The next thing I know I was a full-blown dominatrix with a dungeon.
Q Were people who knew you well surprised? A At first my friends couldnt understand it. They didnt totally leave me, but I didnt get invited to parties the way I used to, and it made me sad. I cried a lot, but I stuck with it, and now its not a problem.
Q Youre upfront about who you are. Does that have an impact on how seriously youre taken? A Less so now. You cant argue with a girl that helped orchestrate a movement that ousted a mayor. We just kind of pulled antics, and the media couldnt help but watch. And I think they watched because I was a dominatrix. Theres something about me that the media just seems to come to. I dont know why, but they do.
Q Is it the titillation factor? A Maybe. The secrets of the dungeon. And Ill talk about that lifestyle. The movie Fifty Shades of Gray comes out next August, and Im positioning myself to be a spokesperson about the lifestyle.
Q Is the local BDSM (bondage and discipline and sadomasochism) community big? A Huge. One group has 2,000 members locally. I am in the role of a submissive now, so I switched roles. I have some personal goals that I want to achieve that I am doing through submission.
Q How did you achieve such comfort with talking frankly about this ? A With my last job, I had a riding crop on my desk. Everyone knew who I was, and I would bring a riding crop to work. After a while, it was just sort of a joke. Its just like pictures of your children. I get to be very out now in this city as a kinky person and a Christian, and I love it. I have served a mission that I received through a supernatural experience in 2002. It is to advance the self actualization of the individual.
Q Tell me about that supernatural experience. A I was closeted as a dominatrix running a business with a dungeon in my home, and I was scared all the time. I didnt have a mission. So I sat for three days and tried to write a mission. On the third day, I was exasperated so I went down to the dungeon. I was down there by myself, and then I heard a voice say self actualization. And I was like, Yeah, thats it, thats the word. Then right after that, it said, Write it and it will become reality. After all, I authored this country.
Q Do you know to whom the voice belonged? A Thomas Jefferson. It was not audible, I dont want people to think Im crazy, it was just in my mind.
Q Why did you change your name?A I saw my birth name on a mock cover of my book, and I about had a heart attack. Its not my name. Its the name on my birth certificate, the name of a man my mother was once married to. Im not part of that tribe. I changed my name to Hubbard, which was my grandmothers maiden name. She was the best person I have known my entire life, and I am of her tribe.
