Not since The Joy Of Sex was published in 1972 has a book influenced the way people have sex. Fifty Shades Of Grey inspired its readers to try kinky sex after getting all juiced up reading the thing. The movie version of the three-book series will be released in February next year and will be the first Hollywood movie inspired by a book about BDSM.
"Since that book came out, our business has exploded," says Eddie Hibbs, retail director for the Stockroom, the largest maker of bondage gear in the world. "It gave the average person permission to experiment with
BDSM."
But a walk through the Stockroom store in Los Angeles would scare the average person. Leather straitjackets, hard-core restraint devices with chains, gigantic butt plugs, and body bags for people into "sensory deprivation". Psychologically, BDSM is about "creating fear". To heighten the experience, you're supposed to add role-play to become "scared stiff".
So if you've never tried this before, where do you begin? A trip to the Stockroom - which caters to "everyone from the curious beginner to the experienced, hard-core player" - was in order.
A walk through the store made me respond like BDSM is supposed to make you feel. At first you're nervous, then curious, then scared, then turned on, then scared again, and then turned on again. "What are those?" I ask, pointing to a case of leather collars that look like neck braces. "Those are posture collars," Eddie says. "They are used to immobilise the slave's head," he adds, scaring me.
"And how about those?" I ask pointing to a black rubber military hat. "Those are for military interrogation scenes and role-play," he says as I fade off to an S&M military scene in my head with role-playing dialogue. (Me: "Anita Dick reporting for duty, sir." Him: "I'm going to tie you up to the chair and I want you lick my taint.")
So, as far as gear is concerned, what is considered "beginner"?
From the looks of this place it would be: ball gag, beginner; gas mask, intermediate; and black leather hood with breathing tube, advanced.

The Stockroom catalogueBrowsing the Stockroom catalogue is fetish and bondage sex education in itself. The catalogue is shot by fetish photographer Steve Diet Goedde and is the kinkster equivalent of theVictoria's Secret catalogue. For "cock-and-ball torture" there are "penis chastity belts".
