CANADA - TORONTO - Carlie Ritch is a transit-riding mother and grandmother. She has also spent 23 years as a professional dominatrix.
Once a week through the end of the mayoral election, the Star is introducing readers to an obscure candidate vying to be Torontos chief magistrate.
Carlie Ritch is a transit-riding mother and grandmother who has lived downtown her whole life. She has also spent 23 years as a professional dominatrix.
Her alias is
Mizz Barbie Bitch. She runs a dungeon out of her condo. One of her web ads reads, in part, looking for submissives to play with, egos to annihilate, wills to crush.
Ritch, 43, is now attempting to savage the spirits of big-name politicians. She is running for mayor on an eclectic platform that includes proposals on issues outside of municipal jurisdiction: a music destination and casino at Ontario Place, aggressive collection of child support, more employees at the dreary provincial offices where drivers line up to renew their licences.
Below, a condensed-for-length transcript of an interview with Ritch:
So why did you decide to run?The reason why I decided to run is quite simply that, I mean, I stand up to bad behaviour. A dominatrix, when you think about it, is all about witnessing deviant behaviours. Its not us performing them, its us watching them. Were an audience to that. And we have become so ingrained into everything that was happening with Rob Ford (
Open Rob Fords policard.), I mean, you can really narrow it down. When this guy has become worldwide news, its really quite something. So the reason I ran was to really put a stamp on the stopping of this bad behaviour. I was hoping that it would have sent a message to turn around and at least put a veil over it, one that we cant necessarily see through. Tone it down. Tone it down.
So what message does your candidacy send? What are you trying to say?Respect, number one. We stand up for that. Doms, were dominant people. We get things done. Thats definite. We stand up and say that, you know what, we may be a dominatrix, but at the same time we have morals and principles and we have boundaries. And thats the thing - (Ford) obviously had people infiltrate his boundaries that he shouldnt have. He needs to have some boundaries. He needs to have some limits. We should be known for the fact that we are a world-class city, not that we have some crack-smoking mayor. Thats one thing with my candidacy: you wont see that type of mess.
Is your candidacy a publicity stunt for your business?Absolutely not. My business tanked with younger clients. I dont care about that. I care about my city. I did it for a reason: to say hey, youve got to stop doing what youre doing, at least become more conscious of it. Because you are the mayor of our city, youre not just - I hate to say the garbage man or somebody like that, people who the only time we necessarily see them is when were driving behind them, and even still, theyre still nameless and faceless, and theyre the ones doing, lets face it, a service we definitely need. The garbage strike shouldve said that. Theyre certainly needed people.
Why did your candidacy make your business tank with younger clients?I just think theyre so afraid, theyre just really afraid. But the clients that Ive had for years and years and years, its more of a thrill to them. Because for them, what theyre into is intelligence and empowerment.
Would you be a dominant personality as mayor?Absolutely. Id get stuff done. You wouldnt turn around and have all this bickering and arguing and stuff like that. Id put more officers in for animal cruelty because Im so against the harming of animals. Id like to turn around and regulate how they kill animals - take the additional three seconds (in slaughter), your meat production will go up. All those bad hormones going into the meat in the first place. Take the additional three seconds.
As a dominant personality, could you also foster consensus on city council?Absolutely. So many reasons. Youve got to think about it. Do you want to get things done or do you still want to be arguing? I live in the downtown core. I live here. I know what its like. I dont just get in my Escalade to hop on a highway and go to Etobicoke. I dont have that, no. Im that person on the subway riding the TTC in rush hour, living on a road that should definitely be a one-way street - I fear for my life every time I walk on the sidewalk, its so ridiculous. I know what its like with the congestion.
