USA - WKRG News 5 is learning more about the former local band teacher accused of having sexual relationships with his students.
Authorities tell News 5 that Jeffery Gainous, the former band director at T.R. Miller High School in Brewton, was arrested Wednesday for having inappropriate sexual contact with at least 8 high school girls over the last three years.
Officials say Gainous is accused of tying up the teenage girls and gagging them using ropes and other bondage devices. The sexual acts took place in the band room and his home, News 5 is told. Additionally, News 5 is told Gainous has confessed to the acts and showed no remorse during his confession.
The victims were between the ages of 15 and 17 at the time of the accused acts. At least one woman, now 20-years-old, came forward recently to help spur an investigation, authorities added.
Gainous held the band director job at T.R. Miller High School before leaving in June to take a position at Thomas County Central High School in Georgia.
The bio on the Thomas County Central High School website for Gainous reads as follows:
"Gainous comes to Thomas County School System from T.R. Miller High School in Brewton, Alabama, where he served as band director since being hired in 2008. His success at T.R. Miller included earning straight superior ratings, receiving Best in Class awards, and being selected and performing for half time at the NCAAF BCS Championship game in New Orleans. The band program flourished under his supervision, growing from 70 to more than 100 musicians at a school enrollment of only 340."
Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin says Gainous confessed during the police interview. He faces one count of a school employee engaging in a sexual act with a student, though officials say additional charges are pending.
Gainous was extradited from Georgia back to Alabama and is currently being held in the Escambia County Jail.
