FRANCE - PARIS - A gay couple were told they were not allowed to kiss on a train platform as they said farewell to each other - but now more than 40,000 have backed them online.

Mirjam van Heugten was in Paris visiting her girlfriend Claire on February 16 when the upsetting incident happened.

They were at the train station with Mirjam getting ready to board a train back to Amsterdam where she lives, when the couple shared a goodbye kiss.

But that is when a staff member for the train company Thalys approached them, informing them that their kissing "would not be tolerated".

Mirjam, 35, told Mirror Online: "I was shocked and disgusted.

"It was horrible.

"Me and Claire live in different countries, so our time together is special - we only see each other at weekends.

"I felt destroyed when the man said that. I didn't know what to do.

"We love each other like all the other couples kissing on train platforms - so why should we be any different?"

Mirjam approached authorities at the train station, but was told it would be best to fill in a complaint form online - which she did.

Days later, she received a 'standard' response from the company saying it was being looked into, but has heard nothing back since.

Incredibly, the Thalys train company courted controversy when it pictured a gay couple in an advert promoting the brand in 2013.

"I am upset that the company did not just come out and apologise," she said.

"If there is a fault in how they train their staff, or what they tell them is OK, then it needs to be addressed, and they need to put out a full statement saying that they are opposed to this kind of behaviour."

After becoming concerned that they company would not apologise, Mirjam approached All Out, a pro-equality campaign group.

With Mirjam, they began a petition which now has more than 40,000 signatures calling on the company to denounce the actions of its staff member.

She said: "What happened that day really hurt, but seeing the reaction, and seeing all the people supporting us and our campaign to have the company apologise - it has really made me happy.

"It just shows that it does not matter where people are from or what sexuality they are, they are willing to stand up for others and that is great."

You can sign the petition here.
